WiFi Setup & Transfer

The A6400's WiFi allows direct connection to smartphones for image transfer and remote control. You can also connect to WiFi networks for FTP transfer.

Quick WiFi Transfer Setup

  1. 1Install Imaging Edge Mobile on your smartphone (iOS/Android)
  2. 2On camera, go to Network → Ctrl w/ Smartphone → Connection
  3. 3Scan the QR code with the app or manually enter WiFi credentials
  4. 4Once connected, select images to transfer or start remote shooting

Auto Transfer During Playback

Press the "Send to Smartphone" button during playback to instantly transfer the current image. You can also select multiple images or transfer all from a date.

NFC Connection

If your phone supports NFC, simply touch the phone to the camera's NFC logo (next to the viewfinder) with the app open. The connection is established automatically.

Bluetooth Connection

Bluetooth Low Energy maintains a constant connection between your camera and smartphone with minimal battery drain. It enables location tagging, time sync, and acts as a trigger for WiFi connections.

Pairing Process

Location Tagging

Once Bluetooth is paired with location linking enabled, your camera will automatically embed GPS coordinates from your phone into every photo. The camera icon on your phone shows when linking is active.

Imaging Edge Mobile

Imaging Edge Mobile is Sony's official app for smartphone connectivity. It provides remote control, image transfer, and editing capabilities.

App Permissions

Ensure the app has location permissions if you want GPS tagging. On Android, you may need to disable battery optimization for reliable background operation.

PC Tethering

Tethered shooting sends images directly to your computer as you shoot. This is essential for studio work, product photography, and any situation where you need instant review on a large screen.

Tethering Setup with Imaging Edge Desktop

  1. 1Download and install Imaging Edge Desktop from Sony's website

  3. 3Connect camera to computer via USB cable (use quality cable for reliability)

Wireless Tethering

The A6400 also supports wireless tethering via WiFi. In PC Remote Settings, set Connection Method to "Wi-Fi Access Point" and configure your network.

Third-Party Software

Capture One, Lightroom, and other applications also support tethered shooting with the A6400. Check software documentation for specific setup instructions.

FTP Transfer

FTP transfer lets you send images directly to a server over WiFi. This is useful for event photography, sports, or any situation where images need to reach an editor quickly.

FTP Configuration Steps

  1. 1Go to Network → FTP Transfer Func. → FTP Transfer and set to On
  2. 2Register your FTP server details (server address, port, folder, credentials)
  3. 3Connect to a WiFi network that can reach your FTP server
  4. 4Enable Auto Transfer or manually select images to send

Network Security

FTP transmits credentials in plain text. For sensitive transfers, use FTPS (FTP over SSL) if your server supports it, or ensure you're on a secure, private network.
